Building Girl Scout Leaders

Thank you for giving of your time and energy by volunteering with the Girl Scouts.  In order to help you along, the Girl Scouts, with the help of dedicated volunteer trainers, has developed a series of trainings that will assist you in learning the basic steps to become an effective Girl Scout Leader.  These trainings will provide you with important information on the Girl Scout Program, Girl Scout Council of Hawaii policies and procedures, and ideas and concepts that you can use to support your group’s activities.  To familiarize yourself with the Council's leadership training requirements, see the information below:

1.  Orientation:  Schedule a meeting with your Service Unit Manager, Membership Development Manager, or Pathways Development Coordinator to receive your Orientation for Girl Scout Volunteers.  This orientation is required before a leader can work with girls.  It focuses on Girl Scout Council of Hawaii expectations of leaders and other volunteers.

Prerequisite:   Contact the Girl Scout Council of Hawaii to speak to the staff person assigned to the area in which you will be volunteering, complete a Volunteer Application, and Volunteer Agreement form.

2.  GS Basics:  After receiving your Orientation for Girl Scout Volunteers, you will be given a Home-Study training titled Girl Scout Basics.  This training will focus on the Girl Scout Movement (mission, history, and values) and the Girl Scout Program (girl/adult partnerships, safety, and goals).   When you have completed the GS Basics Home-Study, complete the exam and evaluation and return it to the address on the form.  An exam with a passing score of 85% or better and the completion of an evaluation form must be received and reviewed by the Council to receive credit for this training. Completion of this Home-Study training is required before a leader can work with girls.

Prerequisite:   Orientation for Girl Scout Volunteers.  NOTE: Completion of both the Orientation for Girl Scout Volunteers and GS Basics is required  before a leader can work with girls.

3.  Age-Level:  Age-Level training for Daisy, Brownie, Junior, or Cadette/Senior Girl Scout provides valuable information on age specific developmental characteristics, behavior management, troop government, girl/adult partnerships and much more.  An experienced Leader who is new to an age level should attend the Age-Level training session for that age level.  Age-Level training is currently offered in two (2) delivery options.

  • Home-Study:  Home-Study trainings can be accessed in PDF format on the Council's website or via email or printed copy by contacting your island Service Center.  An examination with a passing score of 85% or better and the completion of an evaluation form must be received and reviewed by the Council to receive credit for any Home-Study training.

Prerequisite:   Orientation for Girl Scout Volunteers and GS Basics.

  • Face to Face:  The four (4) hour "face to face" training is conducted by a Council trainer at the Council's Oahu office location.

Prerequisite:  Orientation for Girl Scout Volunteers and GS Basics.

4.  First Aid and CPR:  Attend a First Aid and CPR  training to assure that a registered adult in your group is certified.  The Council offers several trainings a year through volunteer Red Cross trainers.  Adults are welcome to take advantage of First Aid and/or CPR training and renewal courses through other organizations in their communities.  Page 37 in Safety-Wise provides a list of organizations and courses for First Aid and CPR Training.  Note:  The CPR training must be adequate for the participants in the activity covered by the first-aider: for example, child CPR for children younger than eight and adult CPR for older girls and adults

5.  Group Travel:  Get your Group Travel Training to become certified in Group Travel and be able to take your girls on fun activities and trips beyond the group meeting time and place.   Every group must have a registered adult in the group that is certified BEFORE their group can go beyond the group's meeting time and place.

Group Travel training is currently offered in two (2) delivery options.

  • Home-Study: This Group Travel Home-Study trainings includes a DVD of an actual training and the accompanying Group Travel manual.  The DVD can be obtained by calling your Island Service Center. The Group Travel manual can be accessed in PDF format on the Council's website or via email or printed copy by contacting your island Service Center.

6.  Out and About:  Attend Out and About Training.  Out and About Training will prepare participants to plan a progressive series of activities for a particular age level to do in outdoor surroundings.  Out and About is required for taking your girls outside of your regular group meeting place and time.   See the Council Training Calendar for dates and time.

Prerequisite:  Orientation for Girl Scout Volunteers, GS Basics, and Group Travel.

7.  Camping Hawaiian Style:  Attend the Camping Hawaiian Style - Troop Camp Training (TCT) in-town and overnight training session in a camp setting.  Covers basic camping skills and safety so you can take your girls camping.  The cost is $14.00 for the overnight training.  Prerequisite:   Troop must have at least one adult who has completed this training accompany the troop on any activity/trip involving camping. This adult does not need to be the leader.

If you cannot attend a training session for any reason, please call the Council office 808-595-8400 x 307 or 1-800-691-4333 x 307 and leave a message.  To effectively prepare for the course, the volunteer trainers need to know how many people have registered for and will attend a class.  Note:  Classes have minimum and maximum participant requirements.
