Voting Members

The Girl Scouts of Hawai`i (Council) thanks you for your continued participation in Girl Scouting in Hawai`i.  We look forward to continuing our efforts to fulfill the Girl Scout Mission of “building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.”

One way in which you can partner with the Council in achieving the Girl Scout Mission is through your participation in the corporate governance of the Council.  The democratic process plays an important role in Girl Scouting.  As the national Girl Scout organization, Girl Scouts of the USA, aptly states in its Constitution, “We declare that the democratic way of life and the democratic process shall guide all our activities.”    The Council is a chartered member of Girl Scouts of the USA and, unlike any other youth serving organization in Hawai`i, is a member-based, non-profit corporation.  This means that the corporate members are given the responsibility of making decisions that impact certain corporate matters and participating in the corporate governance of the Council.

You are a corporate member of the Council if you are a registered member of Girl Scouts of the USA through the Council for the current membership year and are (1) a female age fourteen and above or (2) a male age eighteen and above, or a Lifetime Member of Girl Scouts of the USA.

In order to vote at the Council’s annual meeting and actively participate in the corporate governance of the Council, you must be a voting member.  To be a voting member, you must be a corporate member of the Council and register to vote at the annual meeting for the current membership year (you may register when you become a Girl Scout member or at a later date by completing the form below).   The Council’s annual meeting is usually held in March of each year.

Voting members are given the responsibility of (1) electing the Officers of the Council, the Members-at-Large of the Board of Directors, the Girl Member Advocate(s) of the Board of Directors, the members of the Council Nominating Committee, the National Council Delegates to the National Council of Girl Scouts of the United States of America; (2) providing general lines of direction for Girl Scouting within the State of Hawai`i by receiving and responding to reports and information from the Board of Directors; (3) taking all other action requiring a membership vote; and (4) conducting other business that may be presented to the voting members.

Friday, March 19, 2010 is the registration deadline to be a Voting Member at the Annual Meeting (March 27, 2010).
