Going Beyond The Group Meeting

As stated in Chapter One of Safety-Wise, “As Girl Scout activities keep pace with an ever-changing world; health and safety remain cornerstones of the Girl Scout Movement.   Safety is planned and practiced by all members.   When Girl Scout members learn about safety, more activities are at their command.   When participants follow safe practices, they can feel relaxed and confident.   While total safety cannot be guaranteed, unnecessary risk can be reduced.”

Seeing that every program, trip, activity, and/or event is planned and implemented with the utmost regard for the physical and emotional safety, health and well-being of each girl is of paramount importance.  The Council recognizes that this responsibility, in order to be effective, must be shared among the participants—both girl and adult.  Thus, Leader training for groups going beyond the meeting place is essential.

The Council provides (2) trainings to prepare leaders to take their girls beyond the group meeting place.  They are 1) Group Travel Home-Study Training  and 2) Camping Hawaiian Style – TCT.

Group Travel Home-Study (Manual and DVD) Training

Because every girl deserves a chance to see the world, Girl Scouts offers many different trip/travel opportunities so girls can see new places, meet new people, and learn about different cultures and ideas. Whether exploring their own neighborhoods, going on overnight camping trips, participating in community service projects, or flying to one of the four world centers, Girl Scouts are continually expanding their horizons.

To this end, the Council has developed the Girl Scout Group Travel Home-Study Manual and DVD training that provides all of the information needed to safely conduct a group trip away from the regular meeting time and place.  What you will find in the Group  Travel Home-Study Manual is general information, a timeline for submission of forms, and  a compilation of the procedures and forms needed for Day Trips, Simple Overnight Trips (on-island), Extended Overnight Trips (inter-island, mainland), Studio 2B Destination Trips (individual girl and group), and International Trips as well as a DVD of a training session. You will also find the Council's Policies and Standards for Adults Participating in the Girl Scout Program.

Group Travel Home-Study (Manual and DVD)

The Group Travel Home-Study Manual can be accessed from our website through the following links -  Group Travel Home-Study Manual and Exam and Evaluation - or via email or printed copy by contacting your Island Service Center.  An examination with a passing score of 85% or better and the completion of a Confirmation of Completion, and an Evaluation form must be received and reviewed by the Council to receive credit for this Home-Study training.  The accompanying DVD can be picked up at your Island Service Center.

Prerequisite:   Orientation for Girl Scout Volunteers and GS Basics.  Group Travel Training must be completed by leader or co-leader BEFORE taking the group beyond the regular meeting time and place.

Camping Hawaiian Style - Troop CampTraining (TCT)

For all leaders planning an activity/trip that involves camping at one of the Council’s three campsites, or “camping” at a non-Girl Scout facility where permanent structures with running water, bathrooms, and electricity are NOT involved, at least one adult who has completed Camping Hawaiian Style - Troop Camp Training (TCT) must assist in the planning process and accompany the group during the camping period.

In order for you to qualify to take your group camping, you must successfully complete the Camping Hawaiian Style - TCT courses which includes Two Parts (an “in-town” and an “at-camp” sessions).  The “at- camp” session includes an overnight at the Council’s Camp Paumalu on the North Shore of O'ahu. Attendance at the overnight session is mandatory for successful completion of TCT.
